Shared Mountain is run by me- Polly Harmer. I am a British Mountain Guide (aspirant) with 15 years professional experience sharing mountain adventures with people. I am passionate about the mountains and sharing what they can bring to people’s lives. I have climbed a few E5s in my days but I’ve actually spent most of my life climbing for movement and to go to great places. I enjoy exploring wild places on earth and love how endless the pursuit of climbing rocks and mountains is.
Why I do the job? I have worked part time as a climbing and mountaineering instructor since I left school. I had the impression that it wasn’t a real job and that I should do something more worthwhile than ‘work in tourism’. I continued to do weekend Mountaineering work but did a lot of youth work, become a Geography teacher, worked in rehab and enjoyed it but came to realise that I really enjoy the pursuit of taking people on adventures. Becoming a mountain guide has qualified me to take people on wild adventures anywhere in the world. I get to be real, meet loads of interesting people and enjoy the stuff we all get from time in the mountains. I love to support people getting up routes and mountains that are important to them, and I get to see people becoming more autonomous, independent and confident in the mountains.
